The Heart, Card 24 of the Petit Lenormand

The Heart names feeling itself, in its most direct form. Not the relationship, not the commitment, not the promise: affection as it is felt. Card 24 is the simplest word in the deck, and the one most often over read.

Meaning

The Heart is the simplest word in the Petit Lenormand: feeling, as it is felt. Affection, tenderness, sincere warmth, attachment. Card 24 describes neither a relationship nor a situation, it names what is happening inside someone.

That simplicity is exactly what makes it a trap. Many readings make it say far more than it does. The Heart does not speak of a couple: the couple belongs to the pair it forms with another card. It does not speak of commitment: that is the Ring. It does not speak of a shared home: that is the House. It does not speak of a declaration: that is the Rider or the Letter. It states the feeling, nothing else.

The imagery of the Dondorf line, around 1890, goes the same way: a single heart, often set at the centre of the picture, sometimes flowered, with no figure and no scene. There is nothing to narrate, there is a word.

Two nuances are worth keeping. The first: the Heart is a warm card, but not necessarily a romantic one. It also covers deep friendship, family affection, generosity, attachment to a trade or to a place. The register is that of the felt bond, not that of exclusive romance.

The second: the Heart does not say whose the feeling is. In a spread you have to look at which side it sits on and which card it falls next to in order to know who loves, and what. A card in isolation gives one word, never a complete reading.

Finally, the Heart promises nothing. It records that an attachment is present in the situation at the time of the spread. Its duration, its reciprocity and its form are the business of the neighbouring cards, not its own.

Playing card and traditional reading

Card 24 is called The Heart and carries the inset of the Jack of Hearts. These are two different pieces of information and should not be confused: the name comes from the printed picture, the inset comes from the playing card the deck originally doubled. The name of a Petit Lenormand card never indicates its suit, and the coincidence observed here is the exception rather than the rule.

In the German school, the Hearts suit points to the emotional and relational register, which confirms the word the card carries. The rank of Jack adds a useful nuance: a young figure, a keen and direct feeling, more spontaneous than solemn.

Some modern editions no longer print this inset. The correspondence remains valid for the reading, it is simply absent from the artwork.

Key combinations

Meaning is born from the pair. The grammar is fixed: the first card is the noun, the second the qualifier. The Heart followed by the Ring speaks of a feeling being formalised; the Ring followed by the Heart starts from a commitment in order to state its emotional content. These are not the same sentences.

CombinationReading
The Heart + The RingA committed love, a formalised emotional union
The Heart + The RiderA declaration arriving, news in matters of love
The Heart + The ScytheA clean emotional break
The Heart + The HouseLove settled at home, a couple living together
The Heart + The KeyThe feeling is confirmed, the love is the right one

Position in the Grand Tableau

Position 24 in a Grand Tableau is the house of the Heart: love, what is loved.

The card that lands there indicates what receives the affection, or what it passes through. The Fox in the house of the Heart points to an attachment to one’s trade, the Mice to a feeling wearing out, the Anchor to a lasting bond. And when the Heart falls in its own house, the word is intensified: the question asked really is that of feeling, not of its setting.

The three tableau formats and the table of the thirty-six houses are set out on the page about the Grand Tableau.

FAQ

What does The Heart mean in the Petit Lenormand?

The Heart names feeling itself: love, affection, sincere warmth. It says an attachment exists, not what follows from it. Commitment belongs to the Ring, home to the House, the declaration to the Rider.

Which playing card matches The Heart?

Card 24 is called The Heart and carries the inset of the Jack of Hearts. The name comes from the picture, the inset from the playing card the deck originally doubled: two distinct pieces of information, even when the suit happens to coincide.

Does The Heart guarantee a love relationship?

No. The Petit Lenormand is literal and non predictive: the Heart names a feeling present in the situation, without saying whose it is or what will become of it. The neighbouring cards supply the setting.
