Meaning
Gebo literally means “gift” in Old Norse. This is a rune of connection, exchange, and partnership. But its heart is symmetrical: it never reverses because the gift is a law that cannot be bent.
In Nordic mythology, Gebo speaks of give-and-take — the fundamental practice of Northern peoples. You do not give to receive later; you give because giving creates bonds. Yet this bond assumes an implicit reciprocity: if you give, you hope the other honors your generosity. If you receive, you commit to honoring the gift. This is how alliances are born.
When Gebo appears, it speaks of what circulates between you and another — or between you and the world. It could be money, but also time, affection, creative energy, an opportunity, a secret entrusted. Gebo describes a moment where exchange becomes conscious, where you recognize the value of what passes from hand to hand.
It also invites you to see beyond the transaction. The gift is not a market — you do not give to count, dominate, or force. You give because the bond is worth it. And when Gebo shows up, she asks: does this exchange, this partnership, really matter? Is there balance, or is one sacrificing more than the other?
Gebo also speaks of alliance. It never reverses because an alliance, once formed, holds firm. It can unravel (that would be a lack of Gebo), but it does not rot from within. As long as it is there, it speaks of solidarity.

When this rune appears in a reading
In daily draw, Gebo invites you to notice the exchanges coloring your day — another’s gesture toward you, an opportunity you offer, a moment of aid. It may also signal that it is time to make visible an agreement: formalize your commitment, confirm your pact.
In past/present/future reading, Gebo in the past speaks of an alliance formed — perhaps the origin of an important relationship. In the present, it says: recognize the current bond, honor what flows now. For the future, it promises a forming alliance, an agreement that will seal.
In practical question casting (work, love, project), upright Gebo encourages transparency, fair sharing, mutual recognition. It asks: “Is this a true partnership, or is one person giving much more than the other?” It also asks you: “Do you dare to receive? Do you accept generosity without shame?”
Since Gebo does not reverse, it always speaks from the same angle: exchange, reciprocity, alliance. But it can present as an invitation (recognize a bond) or an implicit question (is this relationship worth it?).
