Meaning

The Rooster is the tenth animal of the cycle of the twelve earthly branches, and its branch is named You. Its theme fits in one sentence: the precision that names what others leave unsaid.

It is a temperament of fine tuning. The Rooster sees the detail that is off and says so. Where others round things off, it names, it sorts, it corrects. That demand produces its best qualities, rigour and organisation, and its best known downside, the criticism that lands before anyone has asked for anything. Its frankness is not roughness of character: it is the direct consequence of a gaze that sorts.

Elegance belongs to the same register. The Rooster’s Metal is a finished, polished metal, whose value lies in the finishing rather than in the mass. The sign attends to the appearance of things as it attends to their exactness, and for it those two forms of care are one and the same operation. A badly finished piece of work bothers it in the same way as an approximate sentence.

The point of fragility is the threshold. Naming what is wrong is a service when it has been asked for, and a wound when it has not. The Rooster measures that difference badly, because exactness is worth something in itself to it, independently of who receives it.

A methodological note, valid for all twelve signs. The animal of the year is only one character out of the eight in a BaZi chart: the branch of the year pillar. The month, the day and the hour carry their own stems and their own branches, which can temper this portrait, sharpen it or contradict it.

The branch and its element

The branch You carries Metal Yin. It is one of the two Metal branches of the cycle, along with Shen, the Monkey’s.

You shelters a single hidden stem: Xin, also Metal Yin. That is a rare case among the twelve branches, most of which hide two or three. The composition of the Rooster is therefore entirely homogeneous, with no second register to fall back on. That is the structural reason for its legibility, and also for its stiffness: what it shows is what it is.

Xin is the jewel, the polished metal, the one whose value comes from the finishing. It adds to the Rooster taste, distinction, and the touchiness that goes with both.

Metal, among the five elements, is condensation: what sorts, cuts and keeps only the essential. The Rooster occupies the place where that element is densest, full autumn, the eighth BaZi month and the direction West.

Alliances and clashes

Three relations structure the branch You. There are no others.

The Liu He alliance, the union of six, ties the Rooster to the Dragon, branch Chen. The pair produces Metal: the meeting reinforces the element of the Rooster instead of displacing it. It is an alliance that confirms rather than completes.

The Liu Chong clash sets the Rooster against the Rabbit, branch Mao, the one that faces it on the cycle. The opposition pronounces no verdict: it describes a tension of axis, two contrary ways of handling the same material, and that tension can be productive.

The San He trine gathers the Snake (Si), the Rooster (You) and the Ox (Chou). Together the three branches produce Metal, and the Rooster holds the central place, the one whose element is already Metal.

These three relations are read between branches, never directly between people. Two charts do not become compatible because their years carry the Rooster and the Dragon: the reading is done on the eight characters, and the year supplies only two of them.
