Meaning
Fehu is the first rune of the Elder Futhark — the one through which everything begins. Its name literally means “cattle” in Old Norse. For Nordic peoples, cattle were not just a form of material wealth; they represented life’s flow itself, renewable energy that allowed the community to survive and thrive.
When Fehu appears in a reading, it speaks of moving abundance. This is not a rune of buried treasure or immobile riches — it’s about the wealth that circulates, multiplies, and creates opportunities. It embodies the drive of new beginnings, the moment when a door opens, resources become available, and you can finally start something.
Fehu asks you to see beyond material goods. It invites you to recognize your own fertility — your talents, creative energy, relationships, inner self. This is a generous rune: it suggests there’s no fundamental scarcity, only cycles of flow and reflection. When it appears, it invites you to embrace mobility, not to clutch what you possess.
Fehu also speaks of gift-giving and reciprocity. Nordic traditions taught that wealth multiplies when shared — the give-and-take that creates connections. If you have, you must offer. If you lack, you must receive. It’s a living balance, not a dead accumulation.
Reversed meaning
Reversed Fehu tells a story of blockage. Where its upright form announces flow, the reversal speaks of stagnation — wealth that no longer circulates and remains fixed. It can signal concrete loss, income drying up, an opportunity closing. But it may also speak to internal blockages: fear of losing which paralyzes you, excessive attachment to goods which imprisons you.
Reversed, Fehu can reveal a stealthy dissipation — a slow bleed of resources that isn’t immediately visible but eventually empties the reservoir. Sometimes this is a bite: giving too much without receiving in return. Or receiving reluctantly, blocking the gift cycle.
This reversal is not a punishment. It’s an invitation to become aware of leaks and get things flowing again. It asks you: where do you hold on out of fear? Where do you refuse to receive? Where do you give until exhaustion?

When this rune appears in a reading
In daily readings, Fehu reminds you to notice what’s happening — an unexpected gain, an opportunity knocking, the arrival of someone resourceful. It may also invite you to assess your real wealth: not just money but time, energy, and relationships that enrich you.
In past/present/future spreads, Fehu in the past describes a period of abundance or new beginnings. In the present, it says: recognize this current flow, don’t neglect it. For the future, it promises arrival, multiplicity, movement into action. Reversed at these positions, it signals missed opportunities, present blockages, impending losses — but always as invitations to restore the flow, not as punishments.
In practical readings (work, love, inner life), upright Fehu encourages action, movement, and generous acceptance. It says: “Receive. Give. Circulate.” Reversed, it asks: “Where do you hold back? What are you afraid of losing that paralyzes you?”
